Saflax Bird of Paradise (reginae)

With its flowers measuring up to 20 cm in red, orange, and yellow, this Strelitzia is a real attraction in any garden that inevitably captivates the viewer. These appear for the first time after four to five years, but then bloom almost all year round.

Our tips:

• Wash off the wax layer of the seeds with soapy water before sowing and then scald the seeds with hot water to improve germination
• Then let the seeds soak in water for 12 hours while it slowly cools to room temperature
• Press the seeds lightly into the substrate and cover only slightly
• Cover the cultivation container with cling film and provide air holes to protect the soil from drying out
• Remove the film every two to three days for about two hours to prevent mold growth
• Place the cultivation container in a bright and warm place at 20 to 25°C
• Keep the soil surface moist but not wet
• Can be kept outdoors from June to the end of September
• Water heavily and thoroughly, but avoid waterlogging
• Strong root growth, therefore use a large pot
• Fertilise weekly from April to October
• Repot into a larger pot every three years
• Overwinter in a bright place at 10 to 20°C; spray regularly with low-lime water
