TROPICA American Pampas Grass, 200 Seeds

The imposing, evergreen Pampas Grass has been a highly popular ornamental feature in European gardens since around 1840, originating from the South American plains of Brazil, Chile, and Argentina. As a striking specimen grass, it thrives best as a focal point in a large patio container or planted in an open, spacious border.

Its fountain-like tussocks of foliage reach heights of 80 to 200 cm and are crowned by magnificent, silvery-white flower plumes extending over a metre long. The "Sunningdale Silver" variety is particularly celebrated for its spectacular, free-flowering display. A practical bonus for interior decor: the cut plumes can be dried and used as an elegant indoor arrangement for up to a year.

Sowing & Cultivation:

• Sow the seeds onto the surface of moist, premium seed-compost and press down gently.
• As a light-germinator, do not cover the seeds. The germination rate can be significantly boosted by mixing approximately 25% perlite into the substrate to ensure optimal aeration.

Overwintering & Winter Protection:

• Pruning should be carried out in early spring only, never in autumn.
• Leaving the dried foliage intact throughout the colder months provides natural insulation for the crown.
• An autumn prune causes water to settle in the hollow stems, leading to crown rot – Pampas Grass is highly vulnerable to winter wet rather than cold.
• To protect the plant, gather the foliage together and tie it before packing the base with dry leaves, brushwood, or mulch.
